Hands up if you, your friends and family say this every year: “Oh don’t worry about getting me a present this Christmas, I don’t want anything!”

Although we mean well, studies suggest that if we stop giving, we are missing out on an important connection with family and friends during Christmas. Who is on our gift list is telling us who is more or less important in our lives. But the biggest effect of gifting is on ourselves as it reinforces our feelings for them and makes us feel caring.

Gift giving is often the most obvious way for people to show interest, love, to strengthen a relationship’s bond and show appreciation to the gift receiver during Christmas. Giving presents during December can be traced back to at least Roman Times when the Romans celebrated New Year. At first, their gifts were symbolic, like branches from the sacred places, food and precious spices. People dressed up in special clothes and even wrote verses to accompany their gifts. But over the centuries, and closer to home, it’s the Victorians who re-invented the notion of gift giving during Christmas by making it a time to unite the family and express gratitude. With so much friendliness, love and happiness during the festive season, exchanging gifts became a natural act of giving during holiday traditions. And then many years later, exchanging of presents took on a whole new “persona” – our legendary Santa Claus, the ultimate gift bearer and now a symbol of Christmas all over the world. And so it began, Dear Santa…

Some people spend months planning and buying their gift for the right person. Likewise, there are just as many, who will be burning the midnight oil searching the internet for the best gift at the last possible moment. It’s normal, because some are born with the “art of gifting”, whereas others need a bit of help and direction, but we all do learn from one another over the years. Children expect the gifts they asked for and attack the biggest presents wrapped in brightest cheerful paper on Christmas morning. Men in the family usually try to work out which one of the beautifully wrapped gifts are socks, so that they can leave it to last, whereas us ladies, we tend to look out for our favourite logos on ribbons, paper and tags – after all, we’ve been hinting all year for a reason…

Why is gift wrapping so important? It isn’t just for covering up the gift in nice paper. It’s about going that step further, like icing on the cake. It’s all about the anticipation and excitement of discovering what’s inside. Think about a time when you received a gift that you didn’t want to open because it was wrapped and presented so nicely, do you still remember what it was? You probably do, and at the same time wish that some of your more significant latter presents also deserved that kind of presentation.

One year I had the most beautiful, perfectly wrapped gift sitting under my tree since mid December, which of course it couldn’t be opened until Christmas morning. This perfect looking square box was wrapped in high quality textured beige paper, finished with the most beautiful hand-made thick fabric red bow with my name embossed on one edge and immaculate hand-writing on the equally gorgeous name tag attached. It even smelled of chocolates and vanilla – it was irresistible. Luckily, the actual gift itself lived up to my expectations (and it wasn’t chocolates), but the fact that I was told nobody knew how it got there had made the whole anticipation game even more exciting. There were no clues whatsoever, and even though I knew all along who it was from, this made me realise how much tiny little details with personal touches can make any gift extraordinary.

This week our glamorous founder Michelle Mone hot footed to Manchester to open Ultimo’s boutique concession in the beautiful House of Fraser department store on Deansgate.

Michelle said: “When we picked the stores, obviously I wanted Glasgow first because that’s my home town, but I love Manchester and it had to be next – even before London. “It’s just cool, isn’t it?”

“A brand new Ultimo concession has been launched in Manchester’s House of Fraser, which is pretty exciting news for ladies who love good quality, sexy underwear and maybe a bit of a cleavage boost. The concession has been open a few months and was officially launched by Ultimo founder Michelle Mone this week.


I went down to House of Fraser recently to check out the launch of the Ultimo Party Solutions range ready for the Christmas season, and have to say that the concession really stands out from the rest of the lingerie department thanks to the chic Ultimo-branded glossy black displays, a big eye-catching screen with Abbey Clancy modelling the range, and the fact that it has a fantastic central position on the lingerie floor. It feels really luxurious and spacious and the products are clearly split by range, or in the case of the fashion collections, prettily arranged into colour palettes.


When I arrived at the store I was introduced to the collection by the Ultimo team. Right now the range is full of gorgeous underwear pieces from the everyday core basics and their fuller bust bras to the stunning fashion range and the OMG gel-technology bras (which enhance your bust by 2 cup sizes). The fashion collection is full of black lace, pewter and deep raspberry hues, and sexy animal print, and is just perfect for the autumn winter season.

They are also selling their new Party Solutions range in-store too, which is a small collection of pieces designed to offer underwear solutions to all your Christmas party outfit problems. Introducing the Ultimo ‘Real Women’ of 2014!


Welcome to the newly launched 2014 Ultimo Real Women campaign: every year it seems to get bigger and better and this year is no different, as our 15 gorgeous ladies show off their beautiful bodies in this week’s issue of Closer magazine – one of the UK’s most popular weekly glossies.

The team at Ultimo were absolutely astounded by the number of entries this year with thousands of applications from ladies from across the country, which goes to show just how much our customers want to see real women in their underwear and follow in the footsteps of our famous models like Abbey Clancy, Luisana Lopilato, Mel B, Rachel Hunter, Helena Christensen and Sarah Harding.

Each year the campaign is open to UK women sizes 8-18 and from ages 18+ and it’s our job at Ultimo to pick the best ladies to represent the real women out there – and please believe us when we say it’s a tough job! After reading each entry carefully Ultimo founder Michelle Mone handpicked 15 ladies from across the UK to take part in the campaign and we’re delighted with our winners this year.

We always announce the winners via Facebook and Twitter and they get a great feeling of support from the Ultimo social media community. The winners all get know to each other ahead of the shoot, chatting on Twitter for weeks. One of our winners this year said to us this year: “Coming to the shoot today, I felt as if I was coming to meet my best friends, not strangers!”

We caught up with Ultimo founder, Michelle Mone to get her thoughts on this year’s campaign…

“Since I started Ultimo, it’s always been my aim to boost the confidence of women everywhere, whether it’s by wearing a beautiful Ultimo lingerie set or using Ultimo UTan. The Ultimo Real Women campaign is really important to me as I feel it’s our duty as a brand to showcase women of all shapes and sizes and make them feel good about themselves.

“It’s incredible the feeling the ladies get after the shoot and the new found confidence it gives them. I’ve posed in my lingerie and I can vouch that it’s not an easy thing to do. But I want women to celebrate their bodies and if women out there can relate to the pictures of our Real Women and see how great they look, then I feel we’ve done our job.”

ULTIMO Commonwealth "Human Bra"_2Scottish Gymnasts create spectacular 10ft 3D Ultimo bra formation in the heart of the Commonwealth Games host city, Glasgow

Ultimo has been devoted to supporting women for over 15 years, so to celebrate the countdown to the Commonwealth Games – in spectacular style – we created the world’s first “human” bra to support young athletes!

We brought together more than 30 gymnasts from across the central belt of Scotland to fashion the dramatic 3D formation in George Square, one of the city’s key Commonwealth Games areas.

Ultimo founder Michelle Mone said: “As one of Scotland’s biggest brands, we wanted to do something extraordinary to celebrate the Commonwealth Games and the amazing human endeavour that will be on display in our hometown next week.

“Gymnastics is one of those sports that just takes your breath away, and the girls did an amazing job of bringing our “Big DD” human bra to life with both strength and grace.”

The creation ties in with the announcement that Ultimo will donate £1 of every bra sale from www.ultimo.co.uk to SportsAid Scotland, whose patron is Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge, for the duration of the Commonwealth Games (July 23rd – 3rd August, 2014), helping to fund the next generation of UK athletes and Commonwealth hopefuls.

The gymnasts who helped to create the Ultimo “Big DD” Human Bra came from two clubs – Hamilton Gymnastics Club and East Kilbride Gymnastics Club, and were aged between 12 and 18 years old.

Wendy Lucas, 35, the Senior Coach of Hamilton Gymnastic Club who choreographed the bra, said: “This was definitely a first for us, but it was absolutely fantastic! We have worked on interesting projects, but I’ve never been asked to recreate a giant Ultimo bra. It was a challenge, but gymnastics always is and we are delighted with the result.”
